2021 Queensland Australian of the Year Award

In recent weeks Dr Gomes was named as one of four finalists for the prestigious Queensland Australian of the Year Award.

Since its inception in 1960, the Australian of the Year Awards has recognised outstanding achievements of Australians from all walks of life. The process begins with nominations from everyday Australians across four categories – Young Australians of the Year, Senior Australian of the Year, Australia’s Local Hero, and the flagship – Australian of the Year category.

A panel of experts in each state and territory review the nominations and select finalists for each category. The Australian of the Year category recognises the achievements and contributions of eminent Australians who are role models for us all. Dr Gomes was named as a Queensland finalist alongside Ronnie Benbow, Melissa McGuinness and Dr Dinesh Palipana OAM. Dr Gomes was honoured to be nominated alongside such esteemed and accomplished Australians.

The Queensland awards took place on Tuesday 10 November with a night to recognise the extraordinary work the nominees have achieved and to announce the Award Recipient in each category. We congratulate Dr Dinesh Palipana OAM on being awarded 2021 Queensland Australian of the Year, and we wish him well at the National Awards in January, and in all his endeavours.
